How does period delay medication work?
The most commonly prescribed period delay medication is norethisterone, a synthetic progesterone. Taking it keeps progesterone levels elevated, which prevents the uterine lining from shedding.

When should I start taking period delay tablets?
Norethisterone is usually started three days before your period is expected. You then take it for as long as you want to delay your period (up to 17 days in most cases).

Are period delay tablets safe?
Norethisterone is well-tolerated and widely used. It is not a contraceptive. Some women experience side effects including bloating or breast tenderness.

How soon after stopping will my period start?
Your period will usually start two to three days after you stop taking norethisterone.
