Aciclovir 5% cold sore cream is an antiviral applied directly to cold sores caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV-1), reducing healing time and severity when used early.

Overview

Aciclovir cream contains the antiviral aciclovir at 5% concentration, designed for topical application to cold sores on the lips and face. It works by inhibiting herpes simplex virus DNA polymerase, blocking viral replication in infected skin cells. When applied at the first sign of a cold sore (tingling, itching, or redness), it can reduce the severity and duration of the outbreak. It is most effective when started during the prodromal phase before a blister fully forms. Topical aciclovir treats the lesion but does not eliminate the dormant virus or prevent future outbreaks.

Directions

Apply the cream to the affected area 5 times daily, approximately every 4 hours (skip the overnight dose). Begin treatment at the very first sign of a cold sore — tingling, itching, or burning — ideally before any visible blister appears. Continue treatment for 5 days. Apply using a clean fingertip or cotton bud to avoid spreading the virus. Wash hands before and after each application. Do not apply inside the mouth, nose, or eyes.

Side Effects

  • Mild burning, stinging, or itching at application site (temporary)
  • Skin dryness or flaking
  • Mild redness
  • Contact dermatitis or allergic reaction (rare — stop use if severe rash develops)
  • Transient numbness (uncommon)
