Aciclovir 200mg tablets are an antiviral used to treat and suppress genital herpes, shingles, and chickenpox caused by herpes simplex and varicella-zoster viruses.

Overview

Aciclovir is a nucleoside analogue antiviral that works by inhibiting viral DNA polymerase, blocking herpes virus replication. It does not cure herpes infections but reduces the severity and duration of outbreaks. When taken as a suppressive therapy, it significantly reduces the frequency of recurrent genital herpes episodes and reduces, but does not eliminate, the risk of viral transmission to partners. It is also used to treat shingles (herpes zoster) and chickenpox in immunocompromised patients.

Directions

For a first episode of genital herpes: 200mg five times daily for 5 days. For recurrent episodes: 200mg five times daily for 5 days (start at first sign of an outbreak). For suppression: 400mg twice daily (or 200mg four times daily) taken continuously. For shingles: 800mg five times daily for 7 days. Take with plenty of water. Start treatment as early as possible when symptoms appear.
